A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the 3 Phases of the HCG Diet

Human chorionic gonadotropin, commonly known as HCG, is a hormone naturally produced during pregnancy. Prescription HCG is FDA-approved for certain medical conditions, but it is not FDA-approved for weight loss.

HCG has historically been associated with highly restrictive, phased diet programs. However, current evidence has not established that HCG increases weight loss beyond the effects of calorie restriction alone. It has also not been shown to redistribute body fat, preserve muscle, reduce hunger, or lessen the discomfort associated with calorie restriction.

Understanding these limitations is important when considering HCG or any medical weight-management option.

How Have HCG-Associated Diets Traditionally Been Structured?

Traditional HCG-associated protocols have commonly been described as having three phases. The details and duration vary, and describing these phases does not mean that the protocol is appropriate or recommended for every patient.

1. Preparation or 'Loading Phase'

Some traditional protocols begin with a brief preparation period, sometimes called a loading phase. Older versions encouraged increased calorie consumption while beginning HCG.

Claims that this phase boosts metabolism, reduces future cravings, or prepares the body to burn stored fat have not been established by reliable clinical evidence.

2. Reduced Calorie Phase

The second phase traditionally combines HCG with a very low-calorie diet. Some widely promoted versions restrict intake to approximately 500 calories per day.

A diet this restrictive carries significant risks, including nutrient deficiencies, gallstones, electrolyte imbalances, loss of muscle, and irregular heart rhythms. Very low-calorie diets should not be attempted without careful medical evaluation and ongoing supervision.

The FDA states that weight loss associated with these protocols results from severe calorie restriction rather than HCG itself.

3. Transition or Maintenance Phase

Traditional protocols conclude with a transition or maintenance phase. HCG is discontinued, calories are gradually increased, and the focus shifts toward developing sustainable nutrition and lifestyle habits.

Long-term weight management generally requires an individualized approach that considers nutrition, physical activity, sleep, medical conditions, medications, and ongoing clinical support. No phased diet can guarantee that lost weight will remain off.

Is HCG Appropriate for Weight Management?

HCG is not FDA-approved for weight loss, and current evidence has not established that it improves weight-loss outcomes beyond calorie restriction alone. Any use for weight management would therefore require a careful discussion of its regulatory status, supporting evidence, potential risks, and available alternatives.

Highly restrictive diets are not appropriate for everyone. Medical history, current medications, nutritional needs, and weight-related conditions should be evaluated before beginning any medically supervised weight-management program.

Explore Your Weight Management Options

Keystone Medical Wellness offers individualized consultations to help patients understand available weight-management approaches. During your consultation, a licensed provider will review your health history, previous weight-loss efforts, medications, goals, potential risks, and treatment alternatives.

Your provider will explain which options, if any, may be clinically appropriate. A consultation does not guarantee that HCG or another medication will be prescribed, and individual results cannot be guaranteed.
